OSA EARS was designed to provide real time high resolution sound and a cloud of species and climate change data from one of Earth’s most bio-diverse rain forests to anyone anywhere in the world. A networked array of microphones, web cams and sensor banks expands over time to cover OSA Conservation’s 5000 acre wildlife corridor, from ground level to canopy top. Located on Costa Rica’s OSA peninsula OSA EARS imagined a broad based platform for researchers and artists interested in habitat protection, soundscape ecology, remote sensing and bird song to carry out cutting edge field work. This proposal created an opportunity to adapt military grade surveillance and sensor technologies for inter-disciplinary wildlife monitoring and protection. After the initial years of on site conceptualizing Bell Labs Experiments in Art and Technology program (EAT) picked up the project, however corporate wavering and lack of vision at the top ultimately led to the project being shelved. In the mean time other entities have, thankfully, moved into that space. Please go to OSA Conservation for the latest news on that biosphere.
